Over the weekend, I was blessed enough to go to the Public House Brewing Company Oktoberfest! It was a beautiful, sunny day, made just a bit brighter by the presence over 20 Missouri breweries, 3 wineries, and even a meadery! My favorite beers were from Piney River, Mother’s, 2nd Shift, and Prison Brews. Music was provided by a local German band and there was even food for sale. All in all, it was one of the best beer festivals I’ve attended. My only complaint is that more seating/tent space would have been nice.
As for the beers themselves, there were a lot of beers I hadn’t had before. Many of the breweries brought Oktoberfests or other seasonal beers; the first two brews I sampled were a Sweet Potato Ale from Piney River and an Oktoberfest from Prison Brews.
Over the course of the day, I sampled many new and exciting beers- favorites included Kirkwood Station’s Rye Not, a coffee/chocolate brew; an Australian IPA from Prison Brews, and Masked Bandit IPA from Piney River.
The Munich Oktoberfest has been a tradition for over 200 years. Modern festivals in Germany are known to include grand parades and carnival rides. Because German-Americans are one of the largest ethnic groups in the US, there are literally hundreds of festivals around the nation every year.
Oktoberfest is a great time, full of beer, pretzels, and revelry, but it is important to note that the first Oktoberfest in Munich was born out of a wedding celebration, a celebration of family. In my post tomorrow, I’m going to discuss the history of my family, which is a lot more interesting than one might expect…
