Hey everyone! Last night, I tried another North Peak brew.Vicious, an American Wheat IPA, clocks in at 6.7% ABV, and it’s a good one. Beautiful coppery-orange color. When straight from the fridge, there were definite metallic taste notes, but as I let it warm over time, those diminished and were replaced by some very strong citrus notes! I really enjoyed this one. As far as hoppy wheat beers go, it’s certainly no 80 Acre, but I would definitely drink this again.
I first got into North Peak’s beers because of their simple yet engaging label art, and due to the werewolf on this bottle, I thought I’d discuss some full moon mythology!
The full moon has been credited as the cause of many unusual behaviors for most of history. Perhaps most famously, it has been said that when the moon is full, certain afflicted individuals morph from humans into bloodthirsty wolves, only to return to human form as the sun rises! There are tamer myths and theories as well, such as the theory that some mentally ill individuals will become more aggressive or violent during the full moon, as well as the superstition that the number of hospital admissions and mishaps rises during the full moon.
Conspiracy theorists also believe that after their 1945 defeat, the Nazis fled to the moon and established a secret base there; this belief was the main inspiration for the 2012 comedy Iron Sky.
With the full moon in full swing right now, I highly recommend getting outside and taking a look! If you’re in Saint Louis, the Compton Water Tower will be open this evening. If you can ascend the almost 200 stairs, a magical view of the night sky awaits you!
