Happy October, everyone! Autumn is my favorite season because the weather is just perfect for curling up with my pup for a book, some coffee, and quiet reflection. Today I’ll be reflecting about two things that I feel get better with age: beer and family.
I was fortunate enough to snag a couple bottles of Perennial’s Barrel-Aged 17, a big, aged mint-chocolate stout. In the (paraphrased) words of Mean Girls, “How do I describe BA 17? BA 17 is flawless.” It pours dark and thick, as you’d expect, with minimal tan head. It tastes just as good as it smells, which I’ve found is a rarity among more “dessert-like” beers. Rest assured, though, that the Peppermint Patty nose is still represented once you start sipping. At 11.5%, this is a 750 that was meant for sharing! And this past Friday, that’s exactly what I did…
You may remember that in yesterday’s post, I said I’d talk about my family. That’s true, but not in the way you might expect. I found my family at the age of 17, when I moved to Rolla for college. College didn’t work out, but the connections I made there would stay with me.
Of all the extracurriculars on campus, I decided the one I would devote my time to would be KMNR, the free-format, student-run radio station on campus. And for some odd reason, I got accepted as a trainee. 5 years later, KMNR remains the best decision I have ever made.
Earlier in 2014, KMNR celebrated its 50th anniversary. Three location changes and a call sign change haven’t slowed down the free-format college radio station. As one of the few true free-format stations left in the country, the djs are given (mostly) free reign when it comes to their shows. Currently on the air, there are metal shows, political talk shows, pop and dance shows, and more! Recently there was even an opera hour. With College Radio Day nearing (3rd October), I hope that you will tune in to KMNR’s webstream over the course of your day!
Be sure to check back next week, as I’ll have three posts over the course of the week!
